Largest theme park in Britain

Alton Towers in Stoke-on-Trent is the largest and most famous amusement park in the UK and one of the country's most popular attractions. Located in Staffordshire, near the town of Stoke-on-Trent, the park offers an impressive mix of thrills, family fun, and historical atmosphere. Originally the estate of the Earls of Shrewsbury, Alton Towers' gardens were opened to the public in the 19th century to raise funds for maintenance. However, since the 1970s, the site has evolved into a modern theme park, now operated by the Merlin Entertainments Group, which also manages other well-known parks like Legoland.

Best roller coasters at Alton Towers

At the heart of Alton Towers are the world-famous roller coasters, which are a highlight for adrenaline junkies and tech enthusiasts alike. Among the most famous are "Nemesis," an inverted roller coaster that was one of the first of its kind in Europe, leading riders through tight gorges and spectacular loops, and "Oblivion," the world's first roller coaster with a vertical drop, plunging passengers into a fog-filled abyss. "The Smiler" holds the record for the most inversions – 14 loops – and offers an intense, disorienting ride. For speed enthusiasts, there's "Rita," which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, and "Wicker Man," an innovative wooden roller coaster featuring fire effects and a mystical theme. These rides have made Alton Towers internationally renowned and attract millions of visitors each year.

Family friendly attractions at Alton Towers

In addition to roller coasters, the park offers a variety of attractions for different age groups. "CBeebies Land" is a specially designed area for young children, based on popular characters and shows from British children's television. Here, families can enjoy gentler rides, interactive play areas, and live shows. For thrill-seekers, there's "Congo River Rapids," a white-water rafting ride through splashy curves, or "Duel," an interactive ghostly experience where visitors battle against spirits. The park is divided into different themed areas like "Forbidden Valley," "Dark Forest," and "Katanga Canyon," each offering its own atmosphere and suitable attractions.

Water park at Alton Towers Resort

Another part of the Alton Towers Resort is the water park, which creates a tropical ambiance under a large dome. With slides like the "Master Blaster," a high-speed water coaster, as well as more relaxing areas like the "Lazy River," it offers variety for those seeking a break from the roller coasters. There's also a mini golf course called "Extraordinary Golf" and a spa promising relaxation amidst the action-packed environment. The park's historic backdrop is defined by the ruins of the old manor house, known as the "Towers," standing in the middle of the grounds and creating a mysterious, almost eerie atmosphere. This blend of history and modernity is unique and sets Alton Towers apart from other amusement parks.

Seasonal events at the theme park

Alton Towers is also known for its seasonal events. Particularly popular is the "Scarefest" at Halloween, where the park is transformed into a spooky world with eerie decorations, actors, and special attractions. Firework events and Christmas celebrations also attract visitors outside the main season. For those looking to stay more than a day, there are several themed hotels, including the Alton Towers Hotel and the "Enchanted Village," offering a special overnight experience with log cabins and treehouses.

We went on a blue light card event. Some rides were shut but we went on as many as we could. The wait times were fairly low, the longest we waited was about to minutes but I think that was down to our timing more than anything. The food is shockingly priced, £11.50 for a hot dog is ludicrous. Didn't queue to get into the park but there was congestion driving in, didn't take too long though. Overall we had a top day out

We came here for a three night stay with a two day pass. We also got the platinum fastrack passes. Alton Towers is awesome. Great fast roller coasters. The Smiler was just mental and fantastic fun. My boy is 8 but quite tall so was able to do all the epic rides. He loves them and became addicted to speed on a holiday to Orlando last year. The Alton Towers rides easily equal the US in themes and speed. It really worth the drive. The fastrack passes were worth the price as the maximum we queued was 15 minute. We often got straight on!

We were actually at splash landings which is very good. A bit signing for the big slides would be good as where to get rings and then queue isn't entirely obvious. Also this time they implemented time slots which didn't before. Make sure you are there early to get your full time slot

Not maintaining the rides. Everything in cbeebies land is dirty/run down or broken. Some things are still broken 2 yrs after our visit when we first noticed. Surely for the charges to get in, and the fact more people are coming post covid restrictions, some investment can be made to at least wipe down the dirty attractions. Night garden in particular is awful. The queues are far too long for small children, the queue boards and app are wildly inaccurate times - double what it says and add more for night garden & tree tops. Rides break when you are queuing (GO JETTERS) and there's no fair system to be let back on first if they come back on. Some are off the entire day, feel short changed. Especially as now they are charging full price for over 90cm yet some children need to be 1.1m to ride some of the rides. Have cancelled the annual pass due to this and the lack of investment in maintaining the attractions. Too many people even on special school holiday weeks/weekends where the park isn't fully open. Also removed some of the children's shows or only run once a day so you miss them if travelling and can't get there for park opening. (Teletubbies, bing) no character appearances - duggee & peter rabbit have been there previously near the play area for photo ops. Now you have to join a massive queue after the show. Such a shame vs our first visit.
